FourFourSeconds ago, the US government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology announced a new device that will “build the first truly global supercomputer” and “provide the most powerful supercomputer in the world” in about four years.
The supercomputer is the “Intel Xeon Phi”, which stands for “Instruction Set Processor”.
It’s a chip that’s “designed to run the latest, most powerful computing technologies,” according to the National Institute.
“The Intel Xeon Phi is a supercomputer that will be the most efficient supercomputer ever built,” said a press release.
“It will be capable of performing 1,000 petaflops, the theoretical maximum speed for a computer today.

As of now, the Intel Xeon has two main components: a CPU and a GPU.

It’s not clear how many Intel Xeon processors are built.
“Intel’s Xeon Phi chip will be based on a custom Intel architecture that has been designed to run today’s most advanced computing technologies, including the latest 4,400-core Xeon processor in the form of the Intel Core i9-7900X,” it added. “
Each chip will require an Intel Xeon processor with up 20 cores and 2.5 million instructions per second (a “quadratic instruction set” or “QI”) and will be able to support a total of 32 GB of memory.”
“Intel’s Xeon Phi chip will be based on a custom Intel architecture that has been designed to run today’s most advanced computing technologies, including the latest 4,400-core Xeon processor in the form of the Intel Core i9-7900X,” it added.
“Achieving such high performance requires Intel to use cutting-edge software, which is currently in the early stages of development.”
The chip will also have “multiple cores,” it said.

In other words, this supercomputer will be twice as powerful as today’s top supercomputers.”

The press release was accompanied by a website that explained how the new supercomputer would be built and why it was being built in such a way.
“The supercomputer could enable the development of the next generation of intelligent devices that are essential for society, as well as the advancement of computing and data storage, among other applications,” it read.
This was a good sign, given that it’s been two years since the announcement.
The “Intel Phi supercomputer” was announced in October of last year, and since then, it has been undergoing testing.
Last month, the chip had to be moved to a different building in the US because of a fire that broke out during a power surge, and now, a new set of tests will be carried out.
The chip is being used to run tests of “quantum computing” on the system, which means it’s capable of running a quantum algorithm, or a process that relies on quantum mechanics to calculate outcomes.
“This supercomputer can be used for tasks that include quantum information processing, quantum computing, quantum cryptography, quantum simulation, quantum search, quantum statistical methods, quantum image processing, and quantum information and control,” the National Institutes of Standards said in a statement.
“Its design is scalable and modular to support the rapid prototyping of quantum computing applications.”
A supercomputer capable of playing video games and making audio was announced last year.
The “Intel Quantum,” as it’s known, is “a state-of-the-art supercomputer system capable of producing supercomputed videos, music, movies, and other multimedia content with a theoretical peak speed in the tens of petafarops.”
This was supposed to be a “world-class supercomputer,” and “it’s also capable of gaming,” but it was not actually possible to do so.
