The Japan Meteorological Agency has officially unveiled plans for a new Tokyo station that will be the tallest building in the world.
Construction began in March and will take a year to complete.
The site is part of a multi-billion-dollar effort to transform Tokyo into a modern city.
The site, called the “Tokyo Station Building”, was first designated a building zone in 2014, and was the site of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.
It was also the site where a series of explosions in New York City killed more than 1,800 people and injured more than 6,000.
Tokyo’s new station will be a world-class landmark, but its design is also going to be influenced by the city’s architectural history.
The original Japanese station building was originally built in 1910, but it was dismantled in 1966 to make way for a train station.
The building was rebuilt several times over the next three decades, until it was finally torn down in 2008, and its site was demolished again.
A new station building is now being built in a completely new site.
“In a city like Tokyo, where so many buildings have been built for the last 150 years, it is only fitting that the Tokyo Station Building will also have a place of honor,” the agency said in a statement.
“It is also a historic building, and it is fitting that it also will be made to stand on its own.”
The agency’s announcement comes as the country prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and is the first official announcement by the agency of its plans to replace the existing station.
