The Oregonian/OregonLive has learned the Oregon Railroad is building a new train building at the corner of Main and E Street NW.
It’s a large structure that would have a maximum capacity of 12,000 people.
The Oregon Railroad announced the new train at a news conference Thursday afternoon, saying the new building would be the first of its kind in the U.S.
The railroad is also adding new stations for trains running between Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and Washington, D.C. The Oregon Railroad has also said the new stations will be able to handle more passengers.
Portlanders have been waiting for the Oregon Rail Authority to build a new line between Portland’s Broadway Station and Eugene’s West Street Station.
A public meeting for the project was held in late June and the rail authority approved $11 million for the construction.
Officials said Thursday that the rail agency will spend $7.2 million on the project, which includes the construction of a track, a crossing gate and a bridge.
The new train was supposed to open this year but the rail project fell through because the state was unable to secure federal money for it.
Construction on the new rail line is expected to be complete in 2020.
The rail authority is also expanding the number of stations on its Portland-to-Eugene line.
It has opened three new stations in Oregon, including one in Portland that will have a capacity of 13,000.
